When I was in second year college, my friend and classmate once told me about the radio program hosted by Krissy a dj (and a graduate of CBEM;BS Entrepreneurship) of OK FM. It was a show aired every Saturday or Sunday, I guess. Its like a "tapatan" or should I call it debate where in people from various kinds and places were confined in the studio to talk about something which is fresh and hot in the society.
If I remember it right, the topic is about the current situation of education here in our country. Since it was education's spirit that revolves around the studio, the guests were college students from all over the city of Legaspi. Of course, Bicol University was there and it was represented by an intelligent lady from the College of Science. One sure thing who was also there is also an intelligent lady from a private school here in Albay. They were not the only guest of the show.They were actually three or four of them, but those two dominated the show.
The battle began and the speeches splendid like what we call nose bleed. What really noticed by my friend was the answer of the girl from BU-CS and the other girl from "that" private school in Albay. When they were asked about the bottom line of the show, the girl from the private school complains about the government. she said that the government is not supporting the students. According to her, it was shown by the lack of facilities in schools, lack of teachers, books and everything under the sun.. It was a nice call for our government for them to look down and see what we really have in our current situation. Aside from those things, there were also lazy professors especially those who were not attending their classes. And I believe being lazy is a form of corruption. Why? Corruption is stealing. As a professor, when you are lazy, you steal the money paid by the government for you to teach the students. Aside from that, you also deprive the students of the knowledge that you were supposed to give them during your time.
Ok, so its the reality. As a student of BU or lets just say a simple student from any school that I am in, I was been so inspired hearing from my friend the answer of the lady from BU-CS. I was expecting that she is also going to throw stones to the government even more than the girl from the private school. But it was not, she didn't complained any single dip to the government. But what she said were words of hard work and independence in order achieve your dreams and aspirations in life. In her answers, she wants to let every student know that beautiful and nice facilities in school were not that important in building the education in you. Everything comes from you and only 10% comes from the school. Why would you depend on our government when in fact you know that it cant even give you a pen as your tool in school? Here in public schools, yes we were deprived of the very elegant and eye catching facilities that other schools has. I am one of those who wished that I would be in La Salle or Ateneo. But upon internalizing everything, I realized that I should be proud that I am in BU. Maybe I would thank those lazy professors, because without them, students like me will not stand up and take the initiative to walk and discover what they should know about the outside world. Its just a step forward for you to take. Why wait if you can reach it with your hands? For this, I can say that the gift of deprivation is independence, hard work and dedication.
